What is tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor is a naturally occurring skin fungus that grows on the perfectly healthy, normal skin of everybody. However, when the fungus grows in excessive amounts, it causes discolouration to the skin.

Symptoms:

Tinea Versicolour can be visually diagnosed, and if there is any uncertainty as to the exact cause of the skin discolouration, a skin cell sample or light test will be used to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Causes of tinea versicolor:

Malassezia, a fungus growing naturally on the human skin, is the cause for tinea versicolor. Growth of the fungus can be brought on by seating, humid weather and hormonal changes.

How is tinea versicolor diagnosed?

Tinea versicolor is usually diagnosed by visual assessment, often with the aid of special lighting device that helps to show the fungus in a different colour to surrounding skin. Your dermatologist may also request a small skin sample to further analyse under a microscope to confirm the presence of tinea versicolor.

How is it treated?

If the condition is not too severe, home treatment will be effective. Over the counter medications are useful in reducing the effects of the fungus. Your Dermatologist will discuss the most appropriate treatment for your condition with you.
