What is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a skin condition that usually affects children and is considered highly contagious. It is a bacterial condition and, although uncommon, can be contracted by adults as well.

Symptoms:

Blisters, sores, lesions and areas of rash are all common symptoms impetigo which can be exacerbated as the majority of cases appear in young children who may scratch the area.

Causes of Impetigo:

Impetigo is caused by bacterial infection and therefore can be transferred easily between skin to skin contact, and where children share beds, clothing or toys.

How is Impetigo diagnosed?

Visual diagnosis is usually sufficient, however your dermatologist may require a swab sample of the area to confirm the presence of the bacteria.

How is it treated?

Treatment of impetigo is by antibiotics and can be administered onto the infected area with a cream or with oral medication to the patient.
