What is the Herpes Simplex Virus?

The Herpes simplex virus is classified into two different types: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is the more common and is contracted by most people as an infant or child, usually through touching an infected person’s skin or sharing a drink. HSV-2 however, is a commonly transferred through sexual activity and affects less people.

Symptoms:

In some cases, patients may never actually experience any noticeable symptoms from the Herpes Simplex Virus. However, if symptoms are present, they often appear as:

• Burning, itching and sores
• Difficulty urinating
• Flu-like symptoms
• Blistering of the infected area

Causes of Herpes Simplex Virus

It is a viral infection and is contagious, so is spread easily between people and can be contracted from kissing, sexual contact or sharing of utensils.

How is Herpes Simplex diagnosed?

Your dermatologist will make a physical examination and may require a swab sample of the area in order to confirm the presence of the herpes simplex virus in your system.

How is it treated?

Although there is no cure, treatment can prevent the patient from displaying symptoms and reduce the discomfort of the virus. Medication is prescribed to treat the symptoms of the herpes simplex virus.
